Steering Geometry Solutions
Some front axles were improperly designed for trucks that are intended to turn frequently. To get maximum tire wear on front axle tires, the steering geometry must be corrected. This ensures that the tires track properly in relationship to the wheelbase of the vehicle.
The above illustration shows the improper and proper steering geometry commonly referred to as the Ackermann Principle. Because the steering arms are improperly designed on some trucks and buses, the geometric relationship between the steering wheels is wrong. This makes it impossible for the wheels to properly track when turning, creating a "toe-out" wear pattern on the tires. This can be corrected by changing the geometry of the steering axle. It cannot be corrected by alignment. The Steering Ackermann Correction Kit is designed to correct this problem for your vehicle.
Steering Geometry - BFI Recycling
In 2003 Mobalign worked with BFI who were experiencing excessive front end tire wear on certain models of their fleet of garbage disposal vehicles. These vehicles are required to do tight turning in and out of tight areas all day.
BFI had previously had these vehicles aligned by another party and noticed little to no change of their aggressive front tire wear. Mobalign was called in for a second opinion by BFI and their tire supplier who was responsible for measuring tire wear, cost per KM/Mile.
Mobalign carried out their inspections checked the wheel alignment and came to the conclusion that the Steering arms had too much toe out on turn. Mobalign had a custom made steering kit made for one of the trucks, and monitored the progress.
The above graph shows the tire cost in KM before and after Mobalign's service.
The above graph shows the rate in which the tires were wearing before and after Mobalign's service.
